Re: [A-List] Modesty Blaise

and Wolfitz

and now AJ shcroft and his i dunno who inside sanctrum - even
without ambition is any. His deputey was beforee the Senate Judic Cmt last
week, but i dot not watch that. but from the procedings with JAsh, iyt was
clear that the othre guy did NOT satisfy the Cmt [except Orin Hatch, who
is using it to push the same agenda]
I watched J Ascft live for a couple hours last night at Senate Judiciary
[oversight] Comte meeting: scary. general type questions he answerd in
general type way - oh yes that is my feeling/intention also specific
concrete questions [ the senator from North Carolina had done his homework
and quoted chapter and verse form the exec order and asked Ashft to take
exact stands on safeguarding right within the broad phrasing/powrs the
exce order gave him. in one case, A. answered with Yn word, and the
Senator said No, the text says Xn [i alas i dnt now remember
the word, but the difference was ONE VOWEL that made a crucial
difference taht A had tried to fiudsge and the Senator did not let him.
But he didnot get a definite answere either.
in fact on virtually every concrete question he answered esentailly
''i'll look into it"

here are three revealing back-forths, the first one one repeadedly:
military tribunals.? well thats Presidents/Rumsfelds bailiwick, not mine,
,but if they ask me form advice I will give
it to them.
What about appeals? They are final [only] appeal auhtority.
Yes, but since they are also the initiators of the indictement,
being also the final recourse does not offer an independent review, which
is essential. Besides IF they have final authority, they could reverse
a tribunal innocent judgement and condemn the wo/man to death? Well, i
have full confidence in them.

J As himself interrupted the senator from Washington:
- that reminds me of a cartoon from last week:
Santa Claus to a kid "I have ways to know if you have been a
good boy and or have been naughty etc.''
Kid "what, are you John Ashcroft?''
 - Aschcroft laughs [it off]
 - Senator "There are quite a few people in this country who will NOT
	regard this as funny""

JAs reads a long quote about the military tribunals to legitimate himself.
then says, i substituted the words al Qaida for nazi and terrorist for
saboteur. and the quote is from Atn Genl Biddle of FDR!
Senator Leahy [not exactly a raving radical!] ah, but that was to cover up
J.Edgar Hoover's trespasses [last word my paraphrase]
